The Story
Behind
This Class
When designing the class, I thought of the most common mistakes that Taiwanese people make when speaking English. I asked myself, "How can I help them see what's really important to a native speaker, beyond stressful tests?"
I noticed how many Taiwanese worry about their "poor vocabulary"! But for native English speakers, we don't care much about this. Instead of memorizing useless, fancy words for exams, for speaking, I recommend training with the words you already know!
Compared to the West, people in Taiwan give presentations that focus on many details they think are important. However, these presenters fail to first understand their audience and consider the listener's perspective, background, or purpose. For example, if my friend wants to tell me about last night's NBA game, but I've never played basketball before, how can he use words like "lay-up," "technical foul," or "free throw" if I haven't heard these words? These vocabulary words are technical, but what about deeper cultural misunderstandings between Taiwan and the West?
So, I train students to first consider their audience. Who are they talking to--NBA stars, kids learning basketball, or someone who doesn't know what a "travel" is? By first assessing and connecting with your audience, you can turn a boring presentation into an engaging, entertaining talk that lights up your listener's minds. Understanding your audience is crucial for achieving your purpose in a presentation, whether it's a speech in class, a company presentation, or a interview for a new potential job.
In class, I've included both general communication skills as well as technical English tips focused on vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Students tend to ask technical questions, but as a native English speaker and teacher, I want to teach the life-changing skills you won't get anywhere else.
